Somaliland: SOLJA condemns the re-suspension of Hubaal Newspaper

Hargeisa (Somalilandsun) Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) has condemned the re-suspension of HUBAAL Media Group by Somaliland appeal court a day after its previous suspension charge has been dropped by the regional court.

The regional court dismissed the suspension order and accused the regional prosecutor of failing to appear the scheduled hearings made by the court and to properly issue its accusations towards the media institution. The court furthermore stated that it dismissed the suspension and added that HUBAAL can’t be again sued.
The newly elected Chairman of SOLJA Mahmoud Abdi Jama this in a press release issued from his office in Hargeisa.
Mr. Mahmoud A. Jama expressed his association’s sadness on the courts unsuitable act and said the suspension of HUBAAL Newspaper was another attack on press freedom in Somaliland.
He told that SOLJA stands for the protection of the journalists and their media institutions; as such they are strongly denouncing the re-suspension of HUBAAL newspaper by the appeal court without giving justifiable reasons and legal grounds to its re-suspension order.
In the net shell, we are calling up for Somaliland judiciary system to apply the provisions of Somaliland Media Laws and respect the legal and legitimate verdicts issued by the competent courts and likewise respect the hierarchy system of courts. The chairman reminded judiciary branch to people are expecting justice and equality from them.
We are calling up on the government of Somaliland to immediately lift the ban from the HUBAAL and HAATUF Newspapers and protect the fundamental rights given by the country’s constitutional law.
