Ethiopia: A Look at the State of Political Parties

Somalilandsun- The ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition may face more significant competition from smaller ethnic-based political parties in future elections.
This follows decisions reached during the EPRDF congress earlier this month which though accepting for the first time participation of junior parties leaders at Executive Committee meetings, but as non-voting members, adds to complexities making prospects for future change remote.
But according to Elias Gebreselassie, a freelance journalist based in Addis Ababa the failure of EPRDF to agree on historic expansion of the front Importance of the regions means change likely anyway because “this conciliatory move is a partial measure, and so is unlikely to satisfy the parties. And given the intricacies of the situation, it is hard to see their wishes being granted soon”
