Somaliland: Parliamentary Committee Pursues Status of Hargeisa Water Supplies

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The Hargeisa Urban Water Supply Upgrading Project-HUWSUP is on-going as planned.

This was informed by the manager of Hargeisa Water Agency Ibrahim Siyad Younis during a briefing to member legislators of the Somaliland parliamentary standing committee in the capital Hargeisa.

According to the deputy chair of the committee MP Ahmed Duale Bulale who spoke to the media after the closed door meeting at parliament buildings the legislators are satisfied with on-going works by the firms contracted to perform works towards upgrading water supply in Hargeisa.

Funded by the Somaliland Development Fund –SDF and the European Union the multi-million dollar HUWSUP is being undertaken by the Hargeisa Water Agency (HWA), with technical support from UN-HABITAT.

HWA manager Ibrahim Siyad YounisThe works expected to fill the gap in water supply for residents of the Somaliland capital city Hargeisa kicked off on the 6th June upon the arrival of the firms from Ethiopia and France, Awash Weldey & Feljas and Masson Contracting Companies respectively contracted to perform civil works.

“Upon querying the city water agency boss on prevailing status of supplies and on-going development activities to alleviate shortages our committee is satisfied by achievements and will provide any necessary support for the same” said MP Bulale

Addressing the media the Hargeisa Water Agency Manager Agency Ibrahim Siyad Younis said that his meeting with the legislators committee was a regular constitutional stipulation which gave him the opportunity to inform on prevailing supplies status, on-going development activities , future plans and constraints.

With the Somaliland capital being inundated by new city residents on a daily basis courtesy of the massive rural to urban migration prevailing thence occasional water shortages the Hargeisa Water Agency is striving to its utmost in order to negate the shortages “said the manager in conclusion.
