Drought has displaced thousands of Somaliland families

Somalilandsun -Toghdeer region is hosting a large number of drought displaced citizens.
This was revealed by Burao local council member Councillor Mubarik Yusuf Elmi ‘Bidhi’ during a press briefing in Hargeisa where he also appealed for concerted support towards drought relief efforts.
Revealing that he has personally contributed two months salary to the national drought relief committee, the civic leader said that the country can no longer wait for external support since difficulties encountered by drought affected citizens call for expedited action.
“The severity of drought in the country is not a matter for the government to handle alone” said Cllr Bidhi as he urged all Somalilanders both at home and in the diaspora to act with haste.
Stating that eastern regions of the country like His own Toghdeer, Sanaag and Sool are the most affected, the civic leader revealed that the Burao local government is hosting under severe strain hundreds of drought displaced residents.
According to the Councillor the displaced people are mostly settling in urban areas in destitution since livestock, their economic mainstay has been obliterated by the recurrent and prolonged droughts in the country.
