Somaliland: International Agencies Urged to Employ Locals

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The minister of national planning, Hon. Sa’ad Ali Shire met with international and local nongovernmental organizations in a meeting at Mansoor Hotel in Hargeisa.

The theme of the conference was (towards working together ‘Tool- kit’). The minister was flanked by the social services and family affairs minister Hon. Garaad.

While addressing the participants from several international and local (NGOs) including UN agencies, Hon. Sa’ad stressed the importance of humanitarian organization working together with the government and among themselves so that priority is given to essential s programs and avoiding duplicating projects. Dr. Sa’ad told organizations to help the government by consulting on issues that needs to be tackled instead of going about it alone. He asked the participants representing the organizations to co-operate in drafting policies that are apt for the country.

The social service minister impressed upon the agencies on the need to hire Somaliland Youth graduates who languish in un-employment because the international organizations are hiring expatriates for jobs that can be done by locals. He said his ministry is going to draft a new policy whereby it will be illegal to employ foreigners where local expertise is available. He went on to say that youth are fleeing the country because of lack of jobs.
