Somaliland: Displaced in Yemen Reach Berbera in their Hundreds

As the Ethiopian Government says plans are ready to facilitate nationals fleeing the Yemeni conflict through Somaliland with among the latest batch being five Ethiopian families and Tens from South Somalia

BERBERA (Somalilandsun) – The port city of Berbera is now home to thousands of refugees fleeing the war in Yemen.
This follows the arrival of Boat carrying over three hundred people mostly children and women that docked at the Berbera on Friday to a warm reception from port, Sahil regional and Berbera local council authorities as well officials of the Somaliland red crescent Society-SRCS and UNHCR.
The current batch which is the fifth to arrive in Somaliland includes five families from neighbouring Ethiopia.
According to officials on site the refugees who were at sea for two days aboard the Nasrullah boat have been located to sites within Berbera prepared for the hundreds of Somaliland citizens as well as those from Yemen and Somalia fleeing the Saudi led war against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
While those arriving include Yemeni native families most are citizens of Somaliland and Somalia and Ethiopia who have been working or living as refugees in the country now under fire.
QuerieBrigadier Tesfayed on the intervention of the Ethiopian Consulate in Hargeisa as pertains nationals now being hosted by the Somaliland government with support from SRCS, UNHCR and IOM, the Ethiopian General Consul Brigadier Berhe Tesfaye said arrangements are in place for expedited facilitation of the arrivals departure to their home towns.
“Once IOM or fleeing Ethiopians approach our office we shall facilitate their departure from Somaliland to anywhere in Ethiopia where the Federal Government has further arrangements for their resettlement” said Brig Tesfaye.
As for those from South Somalia, their authorities are yet to make any arrangements while Native Yemenis are being settled in various parts of their choice in Somaliland most specifically in Hargeisa where hundreds have already made home and started income generating activities.
