Somaliland sun – Nine Children are reported to have died as a result of a mysterious disease in the eastern Somaliland regions of Sool and Toghdeer.

According to the Sool Regional health coordinator Mahmud Khalif Farah the ailment has so far claimed two youthful lives in Saah-deer district in Sool region.

“Regional Medical teams assisted by colleagues dispatched by the national government in Hargeisa are working round the clock towards deterring further deaths” Mahmud Khalif told us in a telephone interview from his offices in Las Anod the Sool regional capital.

According to the health official symptoms associated with the virus borne ailment include high fever, Acute pneumonia and diarrhea which are symbolic of Diphtheria.

The malady here is that Diphtheria does not affect children over ten while one of the deceased in Saah-deer is above that age.

Other similar deaths numbering seven have been reported in Widh-widh district of Toghdeer region though we were unable to verify with regional medical officials by the time of going to; press.

“Though the ailment afflicts both children and adults it is the former who are succumbing and our teams are working tirelessly to unearth this mystery, Said Mahmud Khalif Farah the Sool Regional health coordinator adding that 70 cases have been reported and are being handled effectively.
