Somalilandsun- Authorities in the Galmudug regional administration of Somalia have arrested a journalist Ahmed Khalif Geedi of the Radio Kulmiye
The arrest without due protocol of the journalist came after he broadcasted renewed clashes in Galkayo town where a bloody war between Puntland and Galmudug regions has been raging and subsequently displacing thousands of residents.
Sources indicate that the detention of journalists Ahmed Khalif Geedi came after he reported overnight clashes between the warring factions in The town on the night of 18th November which was a breach of a ceasefire agreement
Confirming the arrest as reported by Somaliupdate “The officers in charge of the Police station where the journalist is detained said that Ahmed Khalif Geedi was arrested on orders by senior officials from Galmudug state.
According to the National Union of Somalia Journalists –NUSOJ Press freedom is a critical issue in Somali regional states, where journalists are still harassed and jailed, and We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ahmed Khalif Geedi as there is no lawful reason for his detention,” read a statement released by Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu, NUSOJ Secretary General. “
With More than 30 journalists having been arrested in several parts of Somalia including the capital in the recent past the National Union of Somali Journalists says that it is very much concerned with the continuing harassment against Somali journalists in the country.
