Community Policing Workshop held in Mogadishu- EUCAP Press Statement

Somalilandsun- EUCAP Somalia organized a Workshop on Community Policing within the maritime context in Mogadishu on March 13th, attended by 10 officers from the Maritime Police Unit.

The Mission’s Senior Police Adviser Jasper Ritzema – who designed and conducted the seminar, discussed how Community Policing is both a philosophy and a strategy in encouraging the public to become partners with the police in preventing crime.

Ritzema highlighted the value of bringing the community closer to the police with the mutual end goal of making neighbourhoods free of crime and disorder through cooperation.

“When the police is merely reactive and as a result show only limited communication with the community, the police and citizens will alienate from each other. Information will not be provided and shared” said EUCAP Somalia Senior Police Adviser during his lecture.

Somali officers attending the workshop agreed that amicably and lawfully resolving conflicts through participation of citizens themselves – the ultimate aim of community policing – would benefit their society.
