UNSC & EU renew Somalia arms embargo & restrict IED components

Somalilandsun: On 15 November 2019, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2498 (2019), which introduced restrictions on the sale / supply / transfer of components which will be used or pose a significant risk of being used to manufacture improvised explosive devices, owing to the recent increase in IED attacks conducted by Al-Shabaab. The UNSC also reaffirmed its commitment to the arms embargo, and until 15 November 2020, renewed the partial lifting of the embargo on Somalian security forces, and the prohibition on imports of charcoal from Somalia. Press release here.

The EU has implemented these decisions by adopting Council Regulation (EU) 2020/169 and Council Decision (CFSP) 2020/170.
