Somalilandsun- Somaliland asserted independence in 1991 after the overthrow of Somali dictator Siad Barre. The region has experienced relative stability and economic prosperity over the years, even though Somalia has been wracked by deadly violence.

Somaliland wants the world to recognize its self-declared independence from Somalia.

25 years ago, the region overthrew Somali dictator Siad Barre (sih-yahd bar-reh)…

…since then it’s experienced relative stability and economic prosperity and has a population of about 4 million.

On Wednesday, thousands of civilians and members of the military celebrated an anniversary by showing off the government’s Soviet-era military arsenal.

Somaliland’s foreign minister is renewing calls for international recognition…he said the world need to recognize “the reality that has existed in Somaliland for 25 years.”
