STRASBOURG (Somalilandsun) – The republic of Somaliland a former British protectorate is worthy of European Union-EU recognition as a sovereign country.

This was urged upon by Member of European Parliament –MEP James Carver during a Bluecard question posed at an EU debate about the situation in Yemen at the continental body’s parliamentary buildings in Strasbourg, 08 July 2015.

According to MEP Carver Somaliland which is not only a stable politic in the volatile Horn region but a partner in the International war on Islamist terror and piracy, is also currently host to thousands of Yemenis who have sought safe havens from ongoing conflict in their war torn country.

Responding to the MEP Carver bluecard question fellow Briton Charles Tannock (UK, Conservatives), who despite acknowledging similar sentiments as Carver on the merits of recognizing Somaliland which he termed as a stable country formerly a British protectorate begged to differed on the subject since debate was about Yemen.

Somaliland remains unrecognized as a sovereign country which it reclaimed in 1991 after withdrawing from its voluntary union turned fateful with Somalia a former Italian colony it entered upon five days upon discarding its 1960 independence from Great Britain

James Carver MEP who is MP for West Midlands and member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) group is a major proponent for the international re-recognition of Somaliland which he has over the year’s undertaken at various forums.
