Somalilandsun – After 23 years of independence, Somaliland self-determination is violated by the so-called democratic nations
The world nations as well the United Nations claimed that they believe in self-determination, the right of peoples in the world to choose their own path. So why Somaliland is indifferent from the rest of the wirld…Somaliland self-determination needs to be respected as any other nation.
As we all know people and nations have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development. –
This is madness, and it is stupidity, but most of all, it is arrogance for not respecting Somaliland choice of self-determination as it should be..
The right to self-determination is the right of a people to determine its own destiny. self-determination is an integral part of human rights law which has a universal application. At the same time, it is recognised that compliance with the right of self-determination is a fundamental condition for the enjoyment of other human rights and fundamental freedoms, whether its civil, political, economic, social or cultural…
We Somaliland people have the same right as every other nation, whether its Bosnia, south Sudan or Crimea of the former Russian federation…
I believe that it’s up to the people concerned to decide their own destiny whether its separatism or joining or uniting together. I don’t understand why on earth the international community accepting some nations and opposing some.
So the question is asked as to how and when should a nation have the right to secede? “When you are deprived of the right to participate in government, and there are serious violations of human rights, such as genocide…. So Somaliland fits all the above factors and should be recognised.
Despite the atrocities committed by the people of somalia and their dictator Siyad Bare in late 80s violent campaign against our people of Somaliland, killing more than 60,000 civilians and displacing all to refugee camps in ethiopia .We stood and rose from the ashes to rebuild and emerge stronger than ever before. We will not allow such a massacre of men, women and children happen again. The people of Somaliland would no longer be victims in our own land.
Over the past 23 years we as a homogenous population, has our own currency, flag, army, government and airline, improving relationships with international aid agencies, and neighbouring countries, investing in education for building thousands of new schools, hiring thousands of new teachers and making all primary schooling free for all students. And that shows the whole world what we have achieved for ourselves and are an example of how we can secede or withdraw without causing wars and violence.
Early 1991, our people of Somaliland decided to withdraw from the union, the union that we have created in the first place for that love of greater somalia and re-assert Somaliland’s sovereignty and independence – in full compliance with international law.Once peace was secured, a general and voluntary demobilisation of our Militia/Freedom Fighters was achieved
without any international assistance and without any foreign troops to make it happen. Once this was achieved then our people rose to the daunting challenge of rebuilding Somaliland on a self-help basis. Reconstruction took place without political recognition or international support, and with only the meagre resources of our country to rely on.
23 February 1997 Presidential Elections …Mohamed Ibrahim Egal won the election
*Mohamed Ibrahim Egal died on 3 May 2002. Vice-president Dahir Riyale Kahin completed his term until new elections were held in April 2003.
The 2001 Somaliland constitutional referendum took place on 31 May 2001 . The referendum was held on a draft constitution that affirmed Somalialand’s independence from Somalia as a separate state. Two-thirds of eligible voters took part in the referendum and 97.1% of them voted in favour of the constitution.
14 April 2003 Presidential elections were held on 14 April 2003. Results show that president Dahir Riyale Kahin won the election
29 September 2005 House of Representatives . The current House of Representatives was formed following parliamentary elections held on 29 September 2005. It has a total of 82 members.
26 June 2010 Presidential Election [
A presidential election was held on 26 June 2010 in Somaliland, . On 1 July 2010, the Somaliland National Election Commission announced that opposition candidate Ahmed M. Mahamoud Silanyo had won the presidential election, defeating incumbent President Dahir Riyale Kahin.
On 28 November 2012, district and council elections were held in Somaliland. The elections saw 2,368 candidates contest 379 positions across the country, and were observed by an international observation mission made up of 50 observers from 17 countries.
We have managed building a functioning, stable and democratic state, building state institutions, and creating a sustainable economy with a balanced national budget that currently stands from zero to $221 million per annum and Despite enormous challenges, Somaliland has held four peaceful elections and has preserved a culture of democracy. Our security forces have the capacity to keep the terrorist groups like al Shabab at bay and we ensured that these terrorist have no safe haven in Somaliland as well as tackling piracy off our coast
We took every measure to safeguard the well-being of civilians, For peace sake, We managed to have a fruitful dialogue with the militia groups, the government released more than 250 prisoners and welcomed a number of the militia’s key leaders into Somaliland’s cabinet.
Somaliland regions are anticipated to contain commercial quantities of oil, and energy companies are undertaking significant explorations. Coca Cola has opened a factory plant and other companies are beginning to recognize Somaliland’s potential as a regional hub. Somaliland is very much open for business as well as a tourism spot with history.
We are happy to have accomplished all that without outside help.
Somaliland will continue advancing security and economic prosperity for all its citizens.
I am inviting to the world nations and leaders, international investors to come and see what we have achieved over the past 23 years.. We are asking the world to acknowledge our achievements that we have accomplished in a short time
Somaliland people believe that the time has now come for the international community to fully recognise the security and stability they have preserved in the midst of chaos, and to acknowledge the legitimate, sovereign and independent status of their nation.
The progress that we have made in the past 23 years is currently recognised by the shefield city council and bristol city counsel. Shefield and Bristol council recognising Somaliland’s right self determination as an independent state. and we are grateful for their support in this case of ours
The United Nations and the whole world communities supported and spoke up for the self-determination and sovereignty of many many countries.Like the the people of South Sudan, East Timor, Kosovo and many others.we somalilanders ask for no more, and no less.we have the right to live like everyone else.
What I don’t understand is that you the world are pumping billions of dollars to wars zones like Mogadishu and others but are not ready to help the peace and the prosperity that we have accomplished over the past 23 years.
I would like to inform the world that our people of Somaliland have the right and capacity to decide our own destiny in the same manner that our Ancestors have done in the past…
Failure to recognise Somaliland would be a great discredit to human rights and to democracy itself, and would destroy the hard-won stability that Somaliland enjoys today.
Here is a polite notice to the world leaders and nations alike.
We are willing to protect our freedom at any cost
We recognised ourselves as an independent state
Long live Somaliland
