Somaliland: NHPC Begins Head Count and Registration of Medical Professionals.

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – All skilled medical personnel in the country are undergoing a head count and subsequent registration.
The much awaited exercise has been launched in Hargeisa by the Somaliland National Health Professions Commission -NHPC in which all persons local and foreign practicing medicine in Maroodi-Jeeh are targeted.
The NHPC boss Dr Ahmed Hashi Oday who urged all those practicing medicine both in the public and private sectors to avail themselves at the Hargeisa Group Hospital for registration warned that once the exercise is complete, operating without a license shall be a crime punishable by law.
While informing that the launch is a pilot one to gauge registration mechanisms and effectiveness Dr Oday who revealed that NHPC has completed studies in all regions said the next stage shall encompass the whole country.
The issue of pseudo doctors and related tertiary in Somaliland is rampant with an almost daily establishment of health facilities by people whose medical services provision skills goes without verification.
Working closely with the ministry of health the NHPC was institutionalized by the government of President Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo recently in a bid to assure citizens quality health services from qualified personnel.

The Somaliland National Health Professions Commission is a statutory body enacted by the Health Regulatory Act 19/2001 which was passed by the parliament in 1999.
The commission’s mandate is to protect the public by ensuring the quality of health care provided by Health Professionals and Health Care Facilities as well as assessing and monitoring that Health Training Institutions are adhering to the standards set for health training and education.
