Somalilandsun- Most of the reasons that led Somaliland to withdraw in 1991 from its voluntary later turned fateful 1960 union with Somalia was the wanton killing of over 200,000 Somalilanders by forces loyal to late dictator Siyad Bare.
Shot, dragged around the streets, tortured or burned the bodies of victims in Hargeisa and elsewhere in the then northern region of Somalia and now Republic of Somaliland were haphazardly buried in shallow mass graves.
While rains have helped identify some through erosion, credit goes to the peruvian forensic anthropology team-EPAF whose annual field schools who facilitated he unearthing of many mass graves in Hargeisa and its environs.
The EPAF is undertaking a new Field School in Somaliland and Peru in 2017 and volunteers are invited both skilled and unskilled. See applicattion details
The very successfully forensic and pathology based field schools conducted in the past by EPAF have not only helped unearth mass graves but facilitated the proper and dignified reburial of the victims most of whom remain unidentified to date.

For a number of years the EPAF has unearthed more mass graves in Somaliland which are part of the many others where close to 200,000 people all of them SOMALILANDERS were buried after mass executions by the regime of the late dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.See photos and details of New Mass Graves Unearthed
