In an article titled Somaliland Elections: A Growing Ownership and Experience, Mohamed Fadal reflects on the history of elections in the Somali region, starting from the first elections in newly independent Somalia. One of the differences he highlights between the elections in Somalia in the 1960s and the series of elections in Somaliland since 2002, is that the particular democratic model emerging in Somaliland is one that has not been imposed from outside but has been nurtured by people in Somaliland. This, he believes provides grounds for optimism for the future of democracy in Somaliland.
