Somaliland: Change of Guard at Hargeisa Municipality

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – An elected Mayor has for the first time handed over at the City municipality thus paving the way for the recently elected council to assumer office officially.

The ten year reign of Eng Husein Mahmud Jiir as the mayor of Hargeisa municipal council has ended after he handed over to incoming mayor Eng Yusuf Warsame Saeed at a colourful ceremony witnessed by various personalities.

The outgoing mayor who enters the annals of the country’s history as the first elected boss of the city local government gave a brief presentation on the successes and constraints encountered by his administration since December 2002 when he assumed office.

Apart from a sizeable amount of cash, Eng Jiir also handed over numerous projects that include those accomplished, ongoing or in the planning among them over forty roads within the municipality that only await official commissioning.

On assuming the mantle of his new office the new Hargeisa mayor Eng Yusuf Warsame who commended his predecessor for diligence to public service, promised to not only sustain achievements but surpass them and at the same time eliminate constraints as well.

The city based local government becomes the first to officially ensconce the incoming councils that were elected during local council elections held nationwide on the 28th of November 2012.
