SHEIKH (Somalilandsun) – The residents of Sheikh City in the Somaliland region of Sahil are to utilize wind powered electricity 24 hours seven days a week as from now.
This follows the official launch of a of a wind power station by the minister of energy and minerals Eng Abdi Hussein Duale at the highland town of Sheikh where he was accompanied by various dignitaries among them Councillor Hussein Abdilahi the visiting mayor of the city of Djibouti the capital of a country neighbouring Somaliland to the west.
“It is a privilege and honour for me to launch this project which is very beneficial to the residents of Sheikh where as you are aware I completed my high school studies at the prestigious Sheikh Secondary School” said Eng Hussein as he cut the tape to official commission the wind powered project.
The wind farm worth $800,000 is owned by Beder Company a local power generating that has promised to shift its electricity source from one depending on fuel generators to renewable ones thence enhance supply of cheap electricity to the entire country.
As he commended Beder for its endeavors in availing alternate and cheap sources of electricity to the nation, Eng Hussein said the government having realized the potential for developing sources of energy locally shall assist those private investors who are already operating or venture into the sector.
The Sheikh Wind power project joins eight others across the country where they have proven their worth through an easily accessible cheap energy supply for sustainable economic development which is a major priority of the President Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo administration
Others speakers at the function included the mayor of Sheikh Councillor Mohamed Abdullah Obsiye who thanked the energy minister for gracing the occasion and Beder company for its implementation.
According to the managing director of Beder Electricity Company Khaddar Jibril Aden, his company established in 1991 is today proud to have succeeded in availing Sheikh town and environs 24 hours electricity supply.
