Somalia: Al-Shabaab Claim Ambush on President Hasan Convoy

MOGADISHU (Somalilandsun)—The Al-Qaeda group of Al-Shabaab says it has ambushed the Somali presidential convoy with rocket-propelled grenades.

Somalia’s al-Qaeda linked Shabab insurgents have ambushed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the militants say, claiming to have destroyed vehicles with rocket-propelled grenades.

“We ambushed a convoy that was escorting the self-appointed Somali president,” Shabab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab said on Tuesday, adding that fighting was continuing near the port of Merka. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Meanwhile, Somalia authorities have strongly denied Al Shabaab claim that they have attacked Somali president’s convoy, according to Govt spokesman Eng. Yarisow who said “this was simply a fabricated lie”.

However, there were no immediate sources verifying the report, though the president has reached at the port city of Marko, Lower Shabelle region.
