International Community in Rigorous Pursuit of Somaliland-Somalia Talks Resumption

Somalilandsun – The corridors of powers in both Mogadishu and Hargeisa have seen an intensification of visits by diplomats from a number of foreign powers mostly from the west.

These diplomats from the International Community in Rigorous Pursuit of enticing Resumption of stalled talks between Somaliland and Somalia in the early months of 2020.

According to a reliable source close to the international endeavors “The initial efforts of the numerous diplomats visiting Hargeisa and Mogadishu is to actualize a first face to face meeting between the presidents of the Somaliland and Somalia Muse Bihi Abdi and Mohamed Abdilahi Farmajo respectively as a prelude to formal talks.

While numerous phases of the internationally sanctioned talks have taken place in the past initially in London and Dubai one each Turkey has been venue of the bulk of these talks that have now stalled completely after negative and public verbal exchanges by the two heads of state.

Led by Sweden whose diplomats met with presidents Farmajo and Bihi in late 2019 the message from the IC was and still remains “Talks between the two countries must resume”

President Farmajo has appeared to accede to the IC requests through announcement that the 2020 annual budget of his Federal government has allocated $500,000 to the talks.

As for Somaliland the government has also committed to resuscitation of the Talks with its nemesis in Mogadishu but only upon fulfilment of some conditions chief among them implementation of agreements reached in earlier meets.

“We are very much open to resumption of talks with Somalia as from where they got stuck, for it is one way of bringing our people and countries together” states Dr Edna Aden who is head of the Somaliland negotiation team.

The former Somaliland foreign minister adds it is imperative that all agreements reached in the past six phases of talks be implemented by the Somalia Federal government authorities thence a confidence impetus for resumption, since citizens of Somaliland are tired of negotiations whose agreements remain unfilled.

“The stumbling block to picking up where we left off on the talks is president Farmajo of Somalia who changes his tune everyday while refusing to acknowledge past arrangements by his predecessors”
says Dr Edna Aden

That being so the international community fronted by Sweden wants to ensure that all stumbling blocks to this talks are done away with expeditiously
