LAS ANOD (Somalilandsun) – The clashes in Dharkein-genyo village that led to the death of over 40 people is about to be concluded through peaceful means.
This follows the swearing-in of 20 member reconciliation committee composed of traditional leaders from the two warring sub clans and from the wider Dulbahante clan in Sool region of Somaliland.
At the swearing in ceremony held at the Sool regional capital of Las Anod and attended by political/traditional and religious leaders as well as government officials the 20 members of the committee swore to perform their reconciliation duties impartially under the guidance of formal and traditional laws as well as per the dictates of the holy Quran.
In less than a fortnight armed skirmishes between the Dulbahante sub clans of Baarsame and Qayaat ensued with the deaths of over 40 people and injury to numerous others following an initial revenge killing in the village of Darkhein-genyoo
This committee comes in the heels of a government warning to the two brotherly sub clans in which the state demanded immediate cessation of hostilities and subsequent peaceful reconciliation in lieu of forceful intervention.
In his warning statement upon arrival in Las Anod the interior minister Mohamed Ali Waran’ade leading a team of senior cabinet members from Hargeisa warned that the Somaliland government shall no longer stand aside and watch as innocent citizens continued losing lives unnecessarily.
On the other hand Las And the Sool Regional capital where three people died in the outskirts of the town in the Darkhen-genyoo conflict related revenge killings is under a dawn to dusk curfew imposed in order to curtail movement of persons intent on restocking conflict firers with supply of weapons to either of the warring sub clans that are also inhabitants of the capital.
Hopefully the committee of elders, government warning and curfew in Las Anod shall facilitate the expedited reconciliation of the warring clans in Sool region despite the fact that a number of leaders from the Baarsame and Qayaat are currently in custody of police in Burao the capital of Toghdeer region on orders of interior minister Waran’ade.
