Somaliland: EUCAP Nestor Offers Medical Equipment and Training to Djibouti Coast Guard and Navy.

Somalilandsun – On Monday, 30 March, EUCAP Nestor Head of Mission Etienne de Poncins and Head of Djibouti Country Office Werner Siemon officially handed 25 medical equipment kits to each, the Head of Djibouti Coast Guard Colonel Wais, and Djibouti Navy Commander Colonel Abdourahman Aden Cher in their respective Headquarters.

This medical equipment will enable the Djibouti CG and Navy to treat injuries that might occur due to bad weather or accidents. The kit is comprised of all the necessary tools needed for a medical emergency situation onboard a vessel where medical treatment in regular hospitals is hours or even days away

One objective of EUCAP Nestor – in close cooperation with the Djibouti Coast Guard and Navy, is to improve their effectiveness in terms of medical assistance at sea.
At the end of the ceremony, the Head of Djibouti Country office Colonel Werner Siemon who is soon finishing his tour of duty stated that “The intention of EUCAP Nestor is to have a well trained personnel in both, the Navy and Coast Guard that is able to cope with unforeseen situations with regard to medical help and humanitarian assistance offshore”

Linked to the donation, a training course on the use and handling of this sophisticated medical equipment will be provided to Officers of the two institutions by a EUCAP Nestor medical Doctor. Thus the supply of specific training kits is a prerequisite for the enhanced training that will follow. These kits will be needed and utilized in more complex training exercises such as penetration injuries, deep burns, rescue and transport of injured person.

“EUCAP Nestor has already provided basic medical training and continues its efforts to train members of the Djibouti Navy and Coast Guards” said Colonel Wais during the donation ceremony.

EUCAP Nestor is a civilian EU mission, under the Common Security and Defence Policy, which assists countries in the Horn of Africa and the Western Indian Ocean in strengthening their capacity to ensure maritime security and in particular to fight piracy.
