PRESS RELEASE(For Immediate Release)
Somalilandsun: The Acting Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Mission to Somalia (DSRCC) Hon. Lydia Wanyoto has congratulated the Federal Republic of Ethiopia on the occasion of its New Year celebration.
“On behalf of the mission, I extend our warm wishes and message of goodwill to the people of Ethiopia on the occasion of their New Year. We join Ethiopians in celebrating this important day of their proud history,” said Hon. Wanyoto.
“We also acknowledge the immeasurable sacrifice that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) has made in the peace efforts in Somalia. The troops rely on immense support at home thanks to Ethiopia’s national spirit of unity with its African brothers,” added Hon. Wanyoto.
Ethiopia is one of six troop contributing countries in AMISOM and has the third largest contingent in the mission. The troops are currently in charge of AMISOM Sector 3 which covers the Bay, Bakool and Gedo regions as well as have a presence in parts of sector 4 jointly with the Djiboutians in Hiiran region of Somalia.
Even though the rest of the world celebrates the New Year in January, the Ethiopians celebrate theirs on the 11th of September according to the Ethiopian calendar which is known as the Ge’ez calendar. Thus the first day of the Ethiopian year, 1 Mäskäräm, usually falls on September 11. According to that calendar, today is January 1, 2007.
