HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The Somaliland Journalists Association- SOLJA has extended congratulations to journalists during the commemorations of the auspicious World Press Freedom Day-WPFD 2014.
National activities to mark the press freedom day which is an international annual event were held in major cities of Somaliland while the main event was in Hargeisa where journalists from most media houses both local and international came together with government officials, politicians and other stakeholders to brainstorm current status of the fourth estate in the country.
During the main event in Hargeisa of whose theme was Safety, Security and Protection of Journalists and Media Houses in Somaliland the chairperson of SOLJA Hasan Mohamed Yusuf extended his body’s congratulations to all Somaliland journalists, those in the Horn of Africa region and worldwide as well.
“We wish all of you and your families happy tidings during the auspicious day of world freedom day 2014 in which we recommit our profession to proper conduct and ethics oriented service profusion to the public” Said the SOLJA boss
Prominent personalities in attendance included the Somaliland minister of information Abdilahi U’kuse, Politician Abdirahman Abdiqadir and a maverick ex-minister of Information Bobe Yusuf Duale among many others.

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. It is an opportunity to:
• celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
• assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;
• defend the media from attacks on their independence;
• pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty
The international theme for World press freedom day 2014 was “Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the post-2015 Development Agenda”
