Somaliland: “I will Double my Efforts” New UNDP Chief Pledges

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The President H.E. Ahmed Mohammed Mohamud Silanyo has reiterated the government’s continued commitment to excellent working relations with the United Nations Agencies and the international community.

The Head of State expressed the sentiments as the New UNDP representative to SL/Somalia Mr. George Conway paid him a courtesy call at the state house on Saturday the 14th December 2014.

He at the same he said that he hoped that Mr. Conway would continue the working relations as per status quo just as the same is expected from the UNDP.

The UNDP country rep hailed the President and the people of Somaliland for vibrant democracy and the good working inter-relations.

He said that he was quite impressed by SL development and noted that his visit was his first ever to this country. He said that the good rapport and working situation will be very conducive as to enable him even double his efforts to address his job tasks ahead.

After paying the courtesy call to the President the Canadian UNDP Chief toured the Civil Service Institute (CSI), Hargeisa University and also met the FM Hon. Mohammed Bihi Yonis.

Mr. Conway assured the FM that his agency would work within the frame work of the NEW DEAL policy. He was conducted around the Hargeisa campus by the University of Chancellor Dr. A. Gaas where he visited the UNDP sponsored Legal Clinic and the Conflict Observatory Research.

Prior to the visits above, Mr. Conway had a day earlier on met with the Planning Minister Hon. Sa’ad Ali Shire before dashing to the coastal town of Berbera.

They pondered questions on priority areas whereupon the Minister interjected with support on the infrastructure sector.

His visitor promised to do the necessary the best of his abilities, despite the fact that roads are really not UDNP’s area of specialty.

At Berbera he visited the local fishermen amongst whom over two dozen are beneficiaries of UNDP funded motor-boats; whereupon he listened to their needs quite attentively.
