Somalilandsun – – It seems that some people in Somalia cannot come into terms with the reality that Somaliland is not part of Somalia any more after the bloody civil war that left tens of thousands of Somalilanders killed by the Siad Barre regime in the 1980s and the early 1990s.

Certain pro Somalia news websites always report as if though Somaliland is part of Somalia. Both Garowe and Sabahi online are among those that are involved in this kind of framed coverage. This kind of media reporting does not help in the development of good relations between the two countries but on the contrary enhance the will and the determination of the people of Somaliland to stay united for one cause which is the “oneness of Somaliland “.

I will not encourage the people of Somaliland taking arms again against Somalia but can promise that my people will defend Somaliland against any aggression by Somalia with bigger force and better determination than during the SNM struggle in the 1980s and 1990s. The people of Somaliland have paid in blood and sweat to get the freedom that they enjoy today. Trying to take that away from them will even cost more lives on both sides.

It would therefore, be advisable to the people of Somalia to accept Somaliland as a neighbourly sovereign sister country and enjoy the cooperation and the support of the people Somaliland.

Background:

Somaliland united with Somalia in July 1st 1960 just 5 days after it got its independence from Britain on June 26, 1960. The union with Somalia has not been successful for the people of Somaliland. Corruption, anarchy and the socialism regime of Dictator Siad Bare prompted the struggle of Somalilanders in 1982 when the Somali National Movement (SNM) was formed in London to free the people of Somaliland from the socialist dictatorship of Somalia.

Somaliland finally broke away from Somalia on May 18, 1991 after a bloody civil war against the dictatorship of the socialist regime of Siad Barre.

Somaliland hopes to gain international recognition very soon after the country has carried out two free and fair presidential elections , one parliamentary election and two municipal elections.

The country has its own flag, its own currency, banks, passport, police and military force.
