HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The internationally sanctioned Talks between Somaliland and neighbouring Somalia are expected to resume in Mid-April in Turkey.

This was revealed by the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Somaliland Dr Mohamed Abdilahi Omar during a 1st April press conference in Hargeisa where he also disclosed that Somaliland government has accepted an invitation from the Turkish government to resume the talks between Somaliland and Somali that had started last year June.

The talks were halted due a change in administration in Mogadishu and in order to allow the new leadership to settle in.

The terms of engagement and framework for the talks have been agreed upon in Chevening by the two sides and were ratified by the two heads of state in Dubai on 28 June 2012.

Dr. Mohamed Omar, Somaliland’s chief negotiator who led the Somaliland negotiating team in the historic meeting with Somalia after 21 years last year in the UK , said that the Turkish government approached both Somaliland and Somali governments and offered to facilitate for the talks resumption.

This international process is expected to underline the realities on the ground and will demonstrate that the former unitary state of The Republic of Somalia has ceased to exist and that there are now two separate states , namely Somaliland and Somalia , and that it is up to them to decide their future.
