Somalilandsun- 10 Somalis, consisting of three families granted protection in Malta, left today to start a new life in Ireland, the Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement.

The latest departure brings the total of beneficiaries of international protection who were relocated to Ireland from Malta since 2007 to 40 immigrants.

This is the third time since 2011 that the Irish government decided to relocate a group of protected refugees from Malta.

Ireland had already relocated 10 individuals from Malta in 2007, 10 on 13 December 2011 and 10 on 6 November 2012.

The Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Manuel Mallia thanked the Irish embassy, in particular Ambassador Jim Hennessy.

Minister Manuel Mallia emphasised the need for more European countries to show solidarity not just in financial terms but also with relocation of migrants which is needed considering the geographic limitations of Malta.
